Make Your Next Family Reunion the Best Ever - Remember That It Isn’t All about You!
2009 March 11

Family reunions are events that are based on the concept of …family! That’s what it’s all about. No doubt, you have heard or seen others in your life expressing their reluctance towards going to a reunion. Maybe you have even been the one expressing it yourself. Our lives are filled with so much to do that we sometimes do not welcome the time that is set aside to enjoy with those that we are linked to in inseparable fashion.
It’s important to remember that your bloodline is not something that you are allowed to question or change. You are who you are because of the blood inside you. Your life force, experiences, ability to learn, emotional patterns, humor and so much more are all formed over the course of your life with your family members. That is something to be honored - if nothing else ever is.
The seniors in your family have a totally different conception of family reunions than you may have. They need these days when their family members share time and laughter together. It helps them to remain happy and positive as they continue to age. The simple act of you attending the reunion with pride, gentleness and tolerant leadership will go miles towards making everyone, especially the seniors, have a wonderful and memorable time.
Just think about it: if Grandma looks around and senses that the others in attendance are bickering, then she will worry. She will want for her family to be in harmonic unison - enjoying the company and growing stronger by it. It will bring many smiles to her face when she looks about and witnesses her family having a good time, laughing and happily participating on bond-forming events together.
And when the reunion has ended, and everyone has returned to their own individual lives again, Grandma will have all these wonderful little snippets in her mind to keep her company in all of those times when the rest do not visit her as often as they should. These things are very important to the aging. They want, and need, to know that, even though this busy world forges onward, their families are strong and unshakable - that when it comes down to it, their families will stand together and firmly represent their names.
So, attend your family reunions with pride - and vibrant happiness. Fake it if you have to! Put on a big smile and be happy to spend time with your family. Forget about stress and work and bills for just a day. They will be waiting for you when you come back.
Remember that family reunions are not about you. You can spend some time in honor of yourself whenever you so choose. Take one for the team and be a champion at your next reunion. And make sure to take Grandma some flowers - or for a walk - or tell her a joke - or dance with her - or…
